DEGREE IN NURSING

 

Presentation

The undergraduate degree in Nursing grants a Bachelor degree, first cycle, and lasts for eight semesters, four years, in a total of 240 ECTS. The teaching/learning process in the Nursing degree is developed by alternating between theoretical lessons and nursing clinical practice, since we value the training that aims the pursuit of a professional activity, thus assuring that the students experience the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge and techniques, essential for their professional performance.

General Aims of the Study Cycle:

The undergraduate degree in Nursing lasts for four years, each year with 60 ECTS, in a total of 240 ECTS, and its mission is “to assure the scientific, technical, human, and cultural training needed to provide and manage nursing general healthcare to a person throughout his/her life cycle, to the family, groups and community, considering different prevention levels” (Article 5 of the Decree-Law no. 353/99 of 3rd September, page 6199).

   · To form highly qualified professionals, with scientific, technical, educational, and cultural preparation, capable of meeting the healthcare needs of individuals and communities;

   · To develop a solid group of skills / knowledge and abilities that grant great quality in the execution of nursing healthcare procedures.

   · To meet he needs of the community in what concerns both the physical care and the psychological, social or spiritual care, therefore assuring the respect for a holistic view of the other.

   · To promote the intercultural, scientific, and technical exchange with other institutions, public or private, national or foreign, that have similar goals, pursuing mutual enrichment.

   · To address the contemporary challenges associated to the need of entrepreneurship skills in nursing and in health.

   · To promote the acquisition of a second language, that associated with the skills mentioned above and in a perspective of empowerment, will enable the integration in different labour markets, consequently responding to the challenges of globalization.

 

Learning Goals

Throughout the eight semesters, the students should acquire instrumental, systemic, and interpersonal skills that can be schematized the following way:

   - To develop skills concerning the ethical and deontological values of the nursing profession, and the humanistic principles of respect for the values, habits, religions of the individual / family, promoting the citizenship, the equity and the culturally adopted care;

   - To create communicational skills, in order to develop therapeutic relations with the patient / family, in accordance with the environment and within the community; to communicate consistently relevant information; to communicate efficiently as part of a multidisciplinary team.

   - To convey scientific and technical knowledge that make it possible to plan educational projects related to health, allowing the individual / family to adopt the appropriate strategies to his/her/their problem; to provide nursing healthcare to the patient / family in different contexts, in a broad perspective, according to his/her life cycle.

   - To develop the acquisition of nursing techniques suitable for the promotion, maintenance, and recovery of health of the individual or the family;

   - To develop skills to be a part of the service management, to control and grant the quality of nursing healthcare, knowing how to evaluate the outcome of the healthcare indicators, and determine the possible solutions;

   - To develop skills regarding the conception, planning, execution and comprehension of the results of study, research and training projects, in the areas of nursing that are relevant for the nursing practice and the professional development, assuring the transmission of updated knowledge to other professionals and to the scientific community.
